Julie Register, Your Guide to Spas, visited this day spa in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in September 2001.

Imagine a place you can go during your lunch hour to meet a friend for a delicious, low-fat lunch while you both get pampering pedicures. Or a place you can stop by on your way home for a steam, soak in mineral water whirlpool, and a massage to dissolve the stress of the day. If you're in Toronto, that place is The Elmwood Spa. This spa buzzes with local clients, but its location next to the Delta Chelsea Hotel makes it a good place for out-of-towners, too.

Although the spa is busy, it runs like clockwork. I climbed the large sweeping staircase to check in at the reception desk on the 2nd floor. This floor also houses the retail area, hair salon, nail area, make-up stations, showers, a large whirlpool filled with mineral water, and a variety of treatment rooms. The receptionist verified my itinerary (Swedish massage, pedicure, lunch, facial) and had me take the elevator to the 3rd floor. The third floor receptionist gave me a printed schedule and asked me to select what I wanted for lunch. She gave me a tour of the women's locker room and water therapies area which includes a pool, whirlpool, dining area, sauna, steam room, and showers. This floor also houses treatment rooms and a nail area.

I had some time before my treatments so I put on my bathing suit and the robe and disposable slippers the spa provided and enjoyed the large whirlpool on the second floor. I dried off and waited on the second floor for my massage with Edward. I was joined by two pregnant women who where also waiting for their massages. I wish I knew about massage when I was pregnant with my children! Edward gave an excellent massage. He took the time to explain what he was going to do (back, arms, legs - flip - arms shoulders neck. He requested that I let him know if pressure to hard or not enough. He used baby oil. He ended with vibration on my neck and head and told me to concentrate on my breathing for a few minutes before getting up.

Fully relaxed, I drifted to the 4th floor for my pedicure. Rosalee, who also does facials, wraps, and waxing, got busy on my feet. They were soaked in a warm water footbath, my nails were trimmed and filed, my feet exfoliated, cuticles pushed back, calluses rubbed down, feet massaged and moisturized with a lotion containing calendula and vitamin E, and polish was applied. During this, Rosalee shared some of her thoughts about pedicures (something you should do just for yourself to make you feel good) and spas (necessary to relax, relaxation is necessary to think clearly - spas separate you from your problems for a short period which allows better focus - good for self). The mani/pedi area fills the 4th floor and spills into the two floors below. It is VERY popular. In fact, I have never seen a spa with so many stations or so many manicures and pedicures taking place at one time. Many women were with friends. Many of them were having delicious looking and smelling lunches brought to them on large wicker trays. I looked forward to my lunch following the pedicure.

Lunch was prepared in the spa and served by water therapies on 3rd floor. Twelve others were also dining while others swam, used whirlpool, steam and sauna. I ordered the Grilled Vegetable Napoleon. It was beautifully presented, very flavorful with a nice texture (vegetables crisp but not raw), slightly spicy, and very filling.

My last treatment was a DNA facial with Rowena on the 2nd floor. It was very relaxing. I will probably miss a step or two since I was "in the zone" but here are what I think the steps of the facial were: cleanse, tone, exfoliate with pineapple, steam, massage, extractions, use of high frequency to create ozone to provide oxygen to cells, mask with collagen then layer with minerals and vitamins. While the mask was setting, Rowena massaged my hands.

It was a great day at a great spa. Too bad I don't live in Toronto. Too bad The Elmwood Spa isn't in my home town. I will have to settle for visits when I can.

Current Features The historic building that houses the spa was originally built in 1890 and was the first YWCA in Canada. It was fully reconstructed and reopened by the present owner in 1982 as a women's fitness club with a small spa. The spa grew and eventually took over the entire space on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors (with no fitness facilities other than the pool!).

The Elmwood is within walking distance to Toronto's major theatres, the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto's Chinatown and one block away from The Eaton Centre, the city's most popular stop to shop and Toronto's number one tourist attraction.

The spa is open seven days a week with extended hours.

The Water Therapies area is for women only except on Wednesdays when it is co-ed.

Amenities include robes, towels, lockers and combination locks, shampoo, conditioner, hairspray, body lotion, antiperspirant, cotton swabs, razors, hair dryers, curling irons and disposable slippers.

There are 10 massage rooms, 11 esthetics rooms, 2 "l'aroma rooms and 28 mani/pedi stations plus 4 hair stations and 3 make-up stations.

There are 118 active employees in the spa not including various shared support staff like marketing, maintenance, accounting, etc.

The Elmwood Spa only employs Registered Massage Therapists. This professional designation means the practitioner has completed a minimum of 2200 hours of intensive study, including anatomy and physiology, in addition to clinical instruction. All RMTs are members of the Ontario College of Massage Therapists and are licensed and registered under the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA).

The Elmwood Spa is the winner of the 2000 and 2001 Consumers’ Choice Gold Award for Best Skincare in the GTA

The Elmwood Complex is affiliated with Elmcrest College (formerly the Zehava School of Esthetics & Massage) which includes a Faculty of Massage Therapy & Applied Health Sciences, Faculty of Esthetics, and Faculty of Spa Management.

Future Plans In Spring 2002, the spa is scheduled to be have a major year-long retrofit with a top Toronto design firm. Feng Shui master, Dvan Grant-Francis of Victoria, B.C. and an ergonomics expert will also be consulted.

The new design (subject to modest change) will have 20 massage rooms (17 single & 2 double - some will have in-room fireplaces), 16 esthetic rooms (11 standard plus 5 wet including 2 vichey's), 1 hydro-tub room, 1 large l'aroma room, up to 6 hair stations, 28 mani/pedi stations, and 5 make-up stations.

Other features of the new design include (but are not limited to) a living wall - fully contained eco-system in the lobby, much larger men's locker room with in-room whirlpool & steam, much larger women's change facility, quiet waiting rooms, juice bar, full spa dining room, and lockers, lunch & rest areas for the staff.

The Elmcrest College, through their association with The Elmwood Spa, will be bringing a Thai Massage Master directly to Thailand to train the trainers or will send trainers to Thailand so Thai Massage can be offered both at the school and at the spa.

The Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa in Asheville, North Carolina Julie Register, Your Guide to Spas, visited this subterranean resort spa in July 2002

The last time I was in Asheville, my family was taking a road trip to Mammoth Caves in Kentucky. We returned to Delaware via Chattanooga, TN, and Asheville, NC. We saw Rock City. We saw Ruby Falls. We saw the Chattanooga Choo-Choo. We saw Biltmore Estate.

We drove through the absolutely lovely Blue Ridge Mountains. My son was seven. Fast forward 11 years. My son is 18. We are on another road trip. We are on our way to Atlanta so my husband, son and his friend can run in the 10K Peachtree Road Race on July 4. My husband and I are in the lead car. My son and his friend follow in another. They will leave us in Atlanta to continue on to New Orleans. On our way to Atlanta, we drive through the absolutely lovely Blue Ridge Mountains. It's just as nice as I remembered. We stop for a few nights at The Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC.

The boys are in one room and my husband and I in another, both located in the historic part of the Arts-And-Crafts-style inn which was renovated just last year. We get a kick out of the enormous fireplaces in the Great Hall and the motivational quotes from the early 1900s painted here and there on the rock walls throughout the inn. Perhaps the most unusual feature is the elevator to our fourth-floor rooms. It's located in the chimney of one of the massive fireplaces, placed there to conceal the noise of the machinery, and has an attendant to run it.

The boys are essentially on their own with instructions to not get carried away with spending, and we don't see much of them during our visit. Looking forward to having some "quality time" with my husband, I have arranged for us to have a Couples Retreat at the Spa. The Spa, new in 2001, is underground. I suspect the location, between the two newer wings of the inn, dictated the subterranean choice. Anything higher would have ruined the view of the golf course, Asheville and the Blue Ridge Mountains for the rest of the inn. Unfortunately, during our stay, the view of the Blue Ridge Mountains from the inn is diminished by a haze from a huge fire in Quebec (which, sadly, is also there days later on our return trip on the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive).

Our appointment for the Couples Retreat is for 8:30 a.m. We start our day in the well-equipped gym at the Sports Complex at 6:30. The Spa has a workout room, but the spa doesn't open until 8. We spend a half hour in the cardio room. I use the elliptical machines, and my husband uses the treadmill so he can run (he's preparing for a 10K run, remember). Then we spend a half hour or so on the weight machines, take showers and head over to the Spa.

We go back through the main inn and take the outside stairway from the Sunset Terrace to The Spa. It's the scenic route and has lots of steps but goes past lovely gardens and along the waterfall that cascades in front of the spa's entrance.

We check in at 8, are invited to sit in the waiting area behind the reception desk, are given health forms to complete and are told an attendant will be with us shortly. Jeff is called almost immediately and disappears into the Men's Changing area. I wait. And wait. Getting antsy, I am finally called by an attendant at 8:20. The receptionist asks the attendant to wait while she checks two more guests in. I ask if I will be able to make my 8:30 treatment. The attendant agrees that we can't wait and takes me into the locker room. Normally, a tour of the facilities would precede a locker assignment and robe/slipper distribution but, because of the time, we go right to the changing room. I change quickly and am escorted past the vanity, showers and inviting women's lounge, down the stairs, into the treatment area to the co-ed lounge where my husband and my therapist, Andriette, are waiting for me.

Andriette warmly greets me with a two-handed handshake and explains the treatment we are about to have. "A lavish treat for just the two of you. Start with a candle-lit couples massage, and add an aromatic bath sprinkled with fresh rose petals, surrounded by more candles. Sip champagne, while feeding each other chocolate-covered strawberries." She then escorts us to the couples treatment room where we find two end-to-end massage tables with rose petals sprinkled on top, a whirlpool tub for two, a table with a bottle of champagne chilling and snacks like chocolate-covered strawberries and Pepperidge Farm cookies, soft candlelight, and Jeff's therapist, Kari.

Our individual therapists consult each of us, asking about our state of being at the moment and what needs particular attention during the massage. We then are asked to choose an aromatherapy scent. I choose the energizing oil which contains peppermint and jojoba oil. Jeff chooses the detox oil which contains lemongrass and rosemary. The third choice is a relaxing oil.

The therapists leave while we get onto our individual tables. They re-enter and softly ask about the amount of light and heat in the room. The light can be controlled with a dimmer switch, and each table is under heat lamps which can be turned on if we are cold. The light is good. The temperature is good. The music is soft and soothing. The room is hushed. I can just hear the waterfall outside the door.

Andriette's massage is wonderful. She pays special attention to my neck, shoulders and back, always needing relief from hours in front of a computer. The massage ends with hot towels on my back - a nice touch.

We are instructed on how to use the whirlpool and left to enjoy the bath, sip champagne and feed each other chocolate-covered strawberries for 50 minutes. Ten minutes before our time is up, the lights are brightened and dimmed to signal the end of the bath.

After we dry off and slip back into our robes, Andriette leads us to the spa lounge where she gives us heated, clove-scented pillows to put around our necks and a Gan Bei "Virtual Buddha" tonic (which we eventually buy in the Spa Retail Shop to take home). We sit and talk some more. It is so nice not to feel like we have to rush to do something or get somewhere.

Finally, we decide to go enjoy the pools. We go back to the changing rooms, put on our bathing suits and meet at the lap pool. This part of the spa is extraordinary. Leading to the common pool area are separate women's and men's thermal areas with hot/cold plunge pools, steam room, inhalation room and sauna. Showers are located right before you enter the main pool area, and everyone is asked to take a shower before going in the pools. Stacks of towels are there if you need them. The main pool area is simply amazing and delightful. A red waterfall cascades from high above, splitting the area into two contrasting areas - a dark cave-like atmosphere surrounds the lap pool where most of the light comes from torchieres on stone columns, and a bright, light-filled area surrounds the mineral pool which is under skylights high in the "cave's" roof. Both pools feature underwater music. Perhaps our favorite pool is the therapeutic waterfall pool where we can stand under the cascading water and "massage" our necks and shoulders. On second thought, we really enjoy the outdoors whirlpool. We stake a claim in one of the two covered porches and alternately use the pools and order food and drinks from the Spa Café waitress who periodically comes by. By the way, there is no spa food in the Spa Café. My son and friend stop by to join us for lunch and then head off on their own. We spend the entire day there. It is fabulous! It is relaxing! It is, well, romantic!

And how do the 18-year-olds fare at The Grove Park Inn? Very well. Very well, indeed! They have room service twice - ordering pizza each time, play Nintendo, watch six movies, work out in the gym at the Sports Complex, have day passes to the Spa where they use the thermal area and the pools (and join us for lunch - a highlight of their day, I'm sure!), and generally enjoy themselves.

I would love to return to the Grove Park Inn someday. The Fire, Rock, Water, and Light Treatment at The Spa beckons. Jeff would like to come back to play on the Donald Ross golf course. My son wants to try a massage. There's something for everyone! This time, I'll try not to let 11 years pass before I get back to Asheville!

A body scrub is a popular treatment, as a facial treatment for the body. It peels and hydrates the skin leaving it soft and supple.

What is A packaging?

Body wraps were originally a treatment where ACE bandages or plastic wrap tightly wrapped around the body to cause rapid weight loss by vasodilation. Find this type of "Losing weight" body wraps that result in the temporary loss of weight and inches, on some spas.

But today, one in a spa body wrap is more likely to be treatment where you're body mask slathered with one of algae, algae, mud, clay, lotion or cream, then for 20 minutes, to keep you warm wrapped made. Later the product is rinsed. The body wrap, .this body wrap treatment usually ends with an applying of the lotion (technically not massage) is a body cocoon sometimes or body mask.

What are the benefits of a body wrap?

Packs, algae, seaweed, mud or clay are Detox treatments that help rid the body of toxins through metabolic stimulation. *.

Body wrap with Shea butter and rich lotions are treatments, softening the skin moisturising.

What happens during A packaging?

Often starts a body pack with peeling by dry brushing or a salt schrubben.Sie lie on whatever finally in - often wrapped are plastic Mylar, but sometimes towels or sheets.

I think it is best if a massage therapist body wrap because of course to take as you apply the product does you massage techniques.A beautician is trained in massage on the other hand. It's simple product apply on the skin.

Once on the product, are warm, remain wrap for 20 minutes.Often the therapist the therapist keeps the space, but sometimes you and give you a scalp massage (much better, I think!)

If the time has expired, you are unwrapped and body mask has come from. This is why it often in damp rooms with a shower, wet table or Vichy shower stattfinden.Der equipped therapist will rinse off with handheld shower or a special Vichy shower that feels absolutely fabulous or could you either leap into a Dusche.Es is how dry a shower, lying down.Dann and it is usually an applying the lotion to moisturize your skin.

Things to watch out for with a body wrap

Expect any body wrap, massage can both treatments - body wrap and massage - to be or search for signature treatments, scrub, massage and body wrap.

Rancho La Puerta in Mexico

Rancho La Puerta is the original destination spa and one of the best. In the 1940s began by Edmond and Deborah Szekely, Rancho La Puerta four miles across the border from California.

Rancho La Puerta has many things the non - food and classes, hiking in the beautiful mountains, outstanding guest speakers and a friendly atmosphere. It is only an hour from San Diego. And it's excellent value compared to destination spas in the United States that is why so many regular guests who call it "The Ranch", again ten, thirteen, kommen.Und 20 times more!

First, Rancho La Puerta serves very best food I ever, a spa habe.Es eaten has his own six-acre - bio - farm, which means the ingredients are outstanding. And with only 120-150 guests the most weeks that cuisine can go some difficulties in the preparation and presentation.

The emphasis here is more about WINS to lose weight health and pleasure in eating is part of it.Meals in Rancho La Puerta were festive and fun as wonderful dinner parties.

The emphasis on healthy foods also shows called "La cocina que Canta," two miles of "The Ranch." in the beautiful culinary CenterWant to try some of her recipes, it's an excellent Cookbook, called "cooking with the seasons at Rancho La Puerta: recipes from the world-famous spa." (Buy directly.)

One of the most popular walks is a walk in the morning, a special extra good breakfast at La cocina, complete with Mexican hot chocolate, then the organic Gärten.Verpassen not tour you! It was so much fun to watch the gardener pull up, beets and carrots.

And make sure to sign up for a cooking demonstration or practical cooking classes at La cocina, often by guest chefs taught. while I there Mary was taught us Karlin how you grilled herb flat cakes, hummus, smoky olive tapenade, Tangine spice-rubbed fish and grilled fruit with lemon zabaglione. You were excellent dishes and easier to make than you might think.

Fortunately there are many activities, so you can eat much food and increase in weight. Morning walks to the sacred mountain behind Rancho La Puerta was invigorating. Most of you came back from breakfast, but some people went to extended hikes lasting a half day. I usually came back from walks, had breakfast, then went to a strain or yoga class.

loved the dance classes, especially the MTV class that walking around in the Demetreous had, as he was the choreographer and we the "Posse" in a Britney Spears "were video."(He was also Britney!) I have never laughed so hard or had exercise so much fun.

After lunch I enjoyed presentations from their fascinating nutritionist to topics like "protein: how much is enough?" And in the afternoon I regular fiction writing classes, which was taught by writer Ellen Sussman, edited by bad girls: 26 writers are bad behavior."(Buy directly.)" I've written classes, but the only one who is in a way that has taught me the tools to actually write a novel. And was inspiring!

In the evening we heard from speakers such as Schwartz of pepper, Ph.d; which explains why having sex, (alone or with someone else) so important for your health.(So, get all!) Pepper is the author of Prime: adventures and advice on sex, love and the sensual years. (Buy directly).

Things, the I don't have time to make a postural therapy class included a jewelry making class in the Art Studio, and spend more time in my room. It was a junior Villa with breathtaking views of the mountains, beautiful Mexican folk art and a real fireplace which re-sets every day.

You spend much time walking in Rancho La Puerta, because the main campus spans many morning and it's easy winding hilly heavily planted paths lost. There are also three different Spas--one for men and two women plus the beauty salon and sometimes I'm confused, Mexican where my treatment bolts are the therapists, and some have very little English, while some are pretty blurred.

I was impressed by several my services, including the "healing therapy massage," 100% trigger point therapy. This is not for everyone, but if you want for chronic pain, it is a good treatment.

We spent ninety minutes on my neck, shoulders and shoulder blades.(This full body massage).Jesus expressed "Pain" to a point, until I said and kept it until I said "Print."The idea was released to the muscle tissue to provide correct therapeutic relief to halten.Ich loved it because I felt that a new freedom in my shoulders and neck. But I was quite tired afterwards and had to eat alone and quiet rest in my room to recover.

I loved the energy balance massage that combines a good body massage with energy work. The 90-minutes treatment massage, was mainly but contain the application a "special lotion" on my neck and hair (Witchhazel?), then down a bunch of cool, fresh herbs in my neck and head, that was wonderful, then swept over my body to "Clean my aura."Then I felt relaxed and energized.

One of the best things about Rancho La Puerta is the people you meet.I traded never seen so many email addresses at a spa.Reservations will make some people even for the same time next year so that you see your new friends can for me this was an inspiring, even life changing Besuch. So I would like these same people to see next year.

When business gets Tough – be Marketer

Good Day Spa, Salon, Beauty Salon, Medical Spa and Massage professional ...

When someone asks, "what do you do for a living?" is only one acceptable answer.

It is not, "I have Day spa." The company is something you own, something is not done.

It is not "I am a Massage therapist."It is just a profession – not what really pay the Bills.

And it is certainly, "give the skin treatments."Or "En" haircuts.Or "I do" manicures and manicures.Or "I'm cut & color specialist."They are the only products and services, which are sold.

The most common cocktail-party question only by accepting the answer is declared loudly and proudly …

"My specialty is to attract new clients …, swaying the existing customers may do purchases … that, to buy the more often … and make sure they keep buying me forever."

I'm not finicky to this point, I'm making is necessary. "what do you do Because your answer?", question says a lot about how you can think about your business, profession or marketer.

And as long as you determine what the own or the products or services are sold – as long as the classified way with any but the marketer – you are in fact run HUGE errors, how you run your own day spa, medical spa, beauty salon, hair salon, massage a policy that discourage you success.

Since every business is primarily a marketing distribution requirements.Because nothing happens before cash register tyres.

So amazes me, so much the structure of its Marketers upside-: with AN MBA, bean-counters and lawyers who appear before it, the top and Marketers forced to beg for resources.

Good times, which is a dreadful idea. it is a stupid bad times.

Companies around the world, to cut costs as there is no tomorrow.

But cost cutting is only half the formula. the following types of times companies that ways to introduce new efficiencies in their business process is most likely to survive. so we no longer can afford to bring the company names and relegate the marketing arm, the second place.

The following types of times we don't need business owners. We need – marketers-running our businesses: those that attract new customers by selling more, and keeping the purchases for each customer in the longer customers have the right of each employee – down to the floor Sweeper of the owner of the top priorities.

Nor do we need to take steps to limit the number of budgets, testing marketers are able to do – we need the execution of expenditure, which shall authorise Marketers is a good idea to run every up the chain to see how many prospects and customers.

My advice: If you own day spa, medical spa, beauty salon, hair salon, Massage practice or work, please read this., then read this. in this case, the collected lot this week work, what should be doing right now to set the trade first.

Forecast for only one meeting in your company to thrive makes more help than anything else could possibly do this week. become a marketer!
